EAST LONDON SUPPORT CENTRE APPEAL
The James Nayler Foundation works with people suffering emotional distress. This is often described or diagnosed as Personality or Conduct Disorder. We have found that many are in prison, others in secure hospitals and yet even more are in the community where despite recent increases in talking therapies, there is still a lack of compassion and understanding. Families, friends and sufferers are often in despair about what to do and where to turn. Underlying all this emotional pain are harmful traumatic experiences. We have an unshakable belief that everyone is born Lovable, Sociable and Non-Violent and that through Truth, Trust and Consent solutions are always possible. Our experience is that no one is beyond understanding and help. We never give up.
This has led us to questioning the role of Compulsory Treatment Orders, Compulsory detention, and imprisonment, in particular of the ill, children and mothers, and of the role of medication within psychiatry. Over the last 10 years our conferences have provided a forum for people’s voices to be heard. We have had sufferers and recoverers addressing our conferences as well as professionals who question current thinking and who outline new ways of working. All our conference proceedings are recorded and published, and have served to create more optimism and hope in this much misunderstood area.
Questioning orthodoxy is not easy or comfortable. Our work with emotional distress sheds new light on many areas of social concern – mental health, homelessness, civil liberties, torture, peace, justice, prisons. We believe that fear is toxic to community.
We are in the process of establishing an Emotion Support Centre in East London where we will develop training, conduct research in this area and provide emotion support. This will build on our previous experience of developing and running an Emotion Support Centre on the Isle of Wight. We have been successful in developing innovative means of support both face to face and using new communication technologies. In particular we will be exploring the establishment of ‘Fear-Free Zones’.
We are working in East London on a limited budget. We need to attract funds to secure the future of this exciting and much needed work.
